Audi and Mercedes, which both aim to surpass BMW in sales by the end of the decade, will follow suit by 2016. In addition to jockeying for growth, the German brands allface the challenge of getting customers to still pay a premiumfor cars as their engines get smaller to meet environmentalregulations. (Photo courtesy of Maserati) April 11, 2014 Drivers in Hampton Roads are about to get a premium dose of la dolce vita. Charles Barker Automotive of Virginia Beach will add Maserati to its expanding lineup of luxury brands as early as June 1, company Chairman Charles Barker said Thursday. The store will be located in the building currently being used by Mercedes-Benz on Virginia Beach Boulevard, and initially would be Maserati’s only outlet between the Washington, D.C., area and Raleigh, N.C. “The luxury automotive section is where we operate, and it’s a great fit for what we do,” company President Nathan Drory said. “It’s a natural.” For Barker, it’s a return to a brand that he sold in the 1980s.

Management has proved critics wrong that 2014-15 will be more of the same.” BMW delivered more evidence of the change taking place on Wednesday when it reported its strongest ever month in March, defending its position as the world’s leading premium car brand, buoyed by strong sales in China and continued recovery in Europe. The strong performance of the BMW brand helped the group notch up record monthly sales of 212,908 vehicles in March, offset a loss of momentum at the auto maker’s U.K.-brand Mini unit as its lineup of new cars was delivered to dealers only at the end of the month, BMW said. In the first three months of the year, global sales of BMW brand cars, SUVs, Minis and Roll-Royce rose nearly 9% to 487,024 vehicles, helped by strong sales of BMW’s X-series sports-utility vehicles and the 3 Series cars. “This is the first time in the company’s history that over 200,000 vehicles were delivered to customers in a single month,” said Ian Robertson, BMW’s head of sales.

Of course, this speaks well for the fat cats of the world but also for the rebound in the European economy as well as China’s swelling mid-upper class. BMW’s March sales were up 11% year-over-year to a record high 212,908 units (BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brands). It was also a record Q1 after a 9% increase year-over-year. Audi’s March sales were up 15% year over year to a record 170,450 cars. Mercedes’s sales were up 13% in March to 158,523 cars, ending a record Q1 that was up 15% to 374,276 units.
